GFAA Holiday Gift Guide

Lisa Goulian Twiste is in her 24th year as Senior Apparel Writer at PGA Magazine.

With the holidays nearly upon us, we take a cue from top PGA of America Golf Professionals and merchandisers regarding some of the products they carry to help golfers stay healthy and fit. Depending on who you’re buying for and what they need, these gift ideas cover everything from what the fitness-conscious player should be wearing to how they can get the most out of their game to ways they can recover after a taxing round. Cheers to a healthy 2024!

Bushnell GPS Watch
Kelly Komancheck – AGM, Golf Shop Manager
RiverCrest Golf Club – Phoenixville, Pennsylvania

The GPS watch we carry is the Bushnell iON Elite GPS Watch. I would say most of the players who wear the watch are golfers who walk the course. They can walk to exactly where their golf ball is, and their yardage comes right up on the watch. They don’t need to carry a point-and-shoot V6 model or a big GPS speaker that would weigh them down as a walking golfer. My son has the watch, stores it in his golf bag and uses the downloaded Bushnell app on his phone. He keeps it in his pocket and uses the bigger phone screen to see the entire hole layout and track his steps as well.

Therabody Products
Ian Brown, PGA – PGA of America Head Golf Professional
Butterfield Country Club – Oak Brook, Illinois

At Butterfield, we know the importance of good health and how this can affect your golf game. We have introduced the full lineup of Therabody products to help our membership maintain the proper mobility and recovery process before and after their rounds. We started with the Theragun device to help with muscle release and movement and immediately saw the response from our membership, which sparked our interest in other Therabody products that can help our members recover after their rounds. There is a big push for compression to help with circulation, as well as heat and ice to help the muscles recover, so we brought in RecoveryAir Leg Compression Boots and the RecoveryTherm Hot and Cold Vibration Knee. This lineup has helped improve our members’ health and, in turn, enables them to play more golf.

Ralph Lauren RLX Joggers
Caitlin Flaherty – AGM, Retail Operations Manager
Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club – Bedminster, New Jersey

At Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club, Ralph Lauren joggers are undoubtedly our best-selling athleisure pant for men and women. These exceptionally soft athletic pants are tailored, yet comfortable due to their fine stretch and sleek waistband. Ralph Lauren has genuinely perfected an athleisure pant that has the comfortability of your favorite sweatpants, but an elevated and refined look. The fabric is particularly soft, stretchy and moisture-wicking. All joggers come with a matching set of T-shirts and layering pieces, making it your go-to outfit. More traditional golfers may be wary of this tailored trendy look, but these pants are an easy transition into the newfound world of athleisure.

G/FORE Golf Shoes
Caroline Basarab – PGA of America
Director of Retail Reynolds Lake Oconee – Greensboro, Georgia

One of the fastest-growing products in our shops is G/FORE footwear, which has a creative and stylish design while also offering comfort. Our women love wearing something entirely different to accessorize their outfits, such as G/FORE’s bright colors and patterns. Many of our customers like the fit and durability of G/FORE when playing out on the course. We had a great response in offering G/FORE shoes at our Men’s Member-Guest. Along with people wearing them to play golf, they are emerging in the fitness market due to their technology, including the foam cushion footbed for all-day support at the gym or running errands. G/FORE is gaining a name for itself in the industry, and it is worth trying in your shop to offer your members or guests something different.

Greyson Hoodies
Bonnie Hamilton – AGM, Director of Retail
Washington Golf and Country Club – Arlington, Virginia

In many ways, golf apparel is the bellwether of the athleisure fashion sector. Golfers are more athletic and, at the same time, they want to look stylish. The hoody straddles this fashion trend. Born in sweaty boxing gyms, it’s now hanging in lockers at posh country clubs. Washington Golf and Country Club sells hoodies in its fitness center and our golf shop. Our best seller is Greyson, which has an impressive range of designs and fabrics, including cotton, cashmere and wicking polyesters. Greyson’s Cokato and Koko designs are our most popular, and the hoodies we sell in our golf shop are appropriate to wear on the golf course.
