Improving Performance Through the Brain-Body Connection

We ask the question on our website, “Why survive when you are built to thrive?” It is my job to understand the brain to body connection and help golfers maximize their performance by overcoming the limits placed on their potential by the brain stem that houses the control centers for vital life functions.

At Nimbus Brain & Spine, everything is centered around the technique called NUCCA – National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. Once we determine the misalignment pattern for each specific golfer via 3-D imaging of their head and neck and subsequent in-depth analysis, we seek the maximum impact with the very minimal amount of intervention. We discover ways that this misalignment in the craniocervical junction (upper neck region) has created compensations, postural shifts and biomechanical disfunction in the rest of the body.

NUCCA is a non-invasive spinal adjustment technique that creates a slow buildup of force and pressure that allows the top bone and spine to act as a lever and unlock the rest of the spine. In my experience, this has become a highly-effective means of rectifying head and neck injuries, reducing barriers to the nervous system.

Unfortunately, many of my patients have seen other doctors and had multiple other treatments, but to no avail. I wish they would have learned about my services in advance of those efforts, but with only 250 NUCCA doctors worldwide, we’re still striving to raise awareness of the benefits of this technique.

From the golfer’s perspective, they often feel like they’re in a neutral setup position, when in reality they’re in a twisted postural compensation position with their body constantly fighting them. The difference between the pros and the average golfer is that the pros play with their physical limitations better.

We map our golfers’ entire neurology, looking at their hips and shoulders, as well as their posture to determine if compensations are being placed on these areas where they typically feel pain. We look at how their weight is fixed from left to right and front to back.

It is very often the case that these bodily deficiencies aren’t brought to the person’s attention via pain or discomfort. The individual will simply be less efficient in his or her movement, which could be highly detrimental to their performance on the golf course. We start getting these individuals back to a neutral state and build upon that to unlock their potential for their body and their brain to really utilize and optimize what they have.

Demonstrating the effectiveness of the NUCCA technique, we conducted a study of 28 golfers and saw an average increase of 6.7 yards off the tee with just one adjustment. I’ve seen increases of as many as 20 yards in some cases. With NUCCA, dozens of adjustments aren’t necessary. We just have to be effective in our imaging, analysis and physical adjustment the first time.

This process is less of a manipulation and more of a movement. We’re creating momentum in the system based on physics and biomechanics unique to each individual that help relieve the fluids that surround their brain and spinal cord, as well as their blood flow.

Length of engagement differs from patient to patient, but we typically see a client for up to eight weeks and have a golf simulator in our office that helps drive home our goals of truly affecting the golfer’s performance over that period of time.

These spinal issues create mental hurdles on the course that often go misdiagnosed. We address this issue during our first session with patients. After all, the physical and mental aspects of the game directly impact each other. It’s vital to evaluate both and rectify the problems that lie within each. Thoughts, traumas and toxins cause golfers to go out of alignment. NUCCA helps alleviate these pressures and frees the golfer’s physical and mental capabilities to maximize his or her performance.
